Apparently my pioneer adventure will not end without a tragic casualty. I don’t recall “Instant pot spoon suffered violent dishwasher torture” in my Oregon trail game so I was not warned of the possibility.
So this isn’t going to go easy for us any step of the way. I think it was because I said I was bored. I take that back. But the good news is, we are in the home stretch.
Tyler, mr. handyman, sufficiently fixed the RV toilet pipe like a boss. However, we discovered that there is yet another issue with the toilet, not freezing related, just broken toilet related. And still no word from RV repair guy. So we remain in the hotel, possibly for the remainder of our stay. I suppose we can thank our stimulus check for paying for our stay. But I have to admit, we are kind of disappointed. We started this adventure in the RV, it would have been kind of nice to finish it that way. I suppose there is always the possibility of simply not using the toilet and using the campsite toilet, but public toilets and covid give me anxiety I simply don’t need right now.
Shortly before the new year, we were contacted by the boys’ school, saying that now that we were Vermont residents, we needed to apply for unenrollment. I wrote back explaining that we weren’t, in fact, Vermont residents yet as we had no address or school district, and everything we owned was still registered in Utah and to please give us an extension until the end of the month so my boys can be educated until we established residency. (run on sentence and I don’t care) I never heard back and when school started, I no longer had access to their school accounts. They had simply kicked us out with no word. Made a few phone calls and all I got was that they were afraid of getting in trouble by allowing a non utah resident in the school. Making the boys schooless.
So, I contacted the school district that the house is in in order to see if they had any ideas what I should do. Their thought was to apply for the Homeless Education Act, allowing those without an address to still get schooled. Which sounded great, until we realized the Act only allowed the boys to go to the school district the RV resided in. As it would only be 3 weeks, this wasn’t a viable option.
Our other option is to beg and plead with the school board and show proof of our house closing and hope they have pity on us and let us in early. Which is where we are now. School board meets on the 21st and the superintendent is pleading our case. Of course they will let us because we are good people and our kids are cute, right? Doesn’t matter that they won’t actually meet us or my kids, but that’s beside the point. Does someone want to explain to me why it is so difficult to get a child educated?
And in even more exciting news, we were super excited to schedule our pod deliveries…. only to be told they don’t deliver to Vermont. Information which was not explained to us when we ordered the pods and gave a loose delivery location as Burlington. They WILL, however, drop our pods at their hub in New Hampshire. At that point, we will have to drive a u-haul 70 miles to New Hampshire, fill it as much as possible with our belongings, drive it to the house, unload it, and lather, rinse repeat until all our stuff is at the house. And then quarantine for 2 weeks again because we left the state. But hey, they gave us 10% off because they suck.
Good news is, just 15 days until closing! We have a roof over our heads and heat and we can call people and they will drop things off at our door like cleaning supplies and clean linens. There’s a chance we will still might make it!
